It’s that time again, friends. What time is that, you ask? Don’t play coy, it’s time to get an eyeful of all the new features that we just released in Fieldwire! I know, it seems like not all that long ago that we unleashed a new batch of tools and tricks for you to play with, but we don’t like idle hands here at Fieldwire, and thanks to your ample input we certainly don’t lack for interesting ideas to flesh out into fully-realized features. And true to form, we have a brand new wave of features and updates to unveil just in time for spring. Let’s dive right into it!

First up, we have updated the Files section of your projects on the web. If you take a look in there, you’ll see you now have the option to create folders to better organize all the files you upload to the project. Folders certainly come in handy in the Plans section, as you undoubtedly know, so adding them to Files is sure to improve your ability to sort and categorize everything you put there. Locating your change orders, RFIs, and daily reports will now be as quick as finding the right folder. Those of you with a mountain of loose files no longer need to stress over finding what you’re looking for - that needle is a lot easier to find when the haystack gets chopped up into smaller, labeled haystacks. File folders are now available on the web, and will be coming to the mobile apps in the near future.

Next (and this is a big one), there are some significant new markup tools for you to take for a spin. We’re pleased to release new tools for leaving lines and highlighting areas, which you can find in the same markup toolbar you’ve always used on your plans. You can now select varying thickness for the pencil/highlighter tool and create straight lines and continuous/connected multi-line markups as well. The highlighter tool is now a sub-selection of the pencil icon, and likewise, the arrow tool can now be found under the line tool icon. While these are certainly exciting additions, we have even more new markup tools coming in just a few more weeks, so be ready for them. Like the File folders, these markup features have been released on the web first and will appear on mobile shortly.

Another useful addition to both web and mobile is drawing layer control, a notable improvement over our previous layering mechanic for your sheets. That all-seeing eye that appears in the top right corner of your plans isn’t just there to hunt for the One Ring; clicking it used to hide all of the markups, tasks, hyperlinks, and attachments you and your team have placed on the plan. We thought it might be more useful if you could pick and choose which content layers you wished to hide, so now when you click on the eye icon, you’ll see a list appear on the screen with all of the possible layers you can hide. These include All Layers, Tasks, Markups, Attachments, Plan Links, and Photos. Enjoy the newfound ability to select which content you want to toggle on or off for any situation!

If you’ve always wanted to connect to Google Drive within Fieldwire, it looks like dreams really do come true. The next time you want to attach a file to a task while on the web, be it a photo, PDF, spreadsheet, or PowerPoint document, just open the task and click on that little paperclip icon. You’ll now see the option to attach a Google Doc, Google Sheet, or Google Slide to the task, in addition to the general Filepicker option that’s always been there. This will allow you to share key documents with your team from the massive shared cloud drive that you’re all likely utilizing already. If you’re doing estimations or calculations, you can attach your Google Doc or Sheet directly to the task and handle everything right there in Fieldwire. We want to create integrations with your most important everyday platforms, and our collaboration with Google Drive is a big step in that direction.

Finally, we’ve made some improvements to how our OCR scans and assembles your plans and hyperlinks. After receiving feedback that it could use some sprucing up, we dug in and made a few adjustments to help mitigate some of the rough spots that some users had when uploading their sets to Fieldwire. And in addition to circular hyperlink details, our software now recognizes and enables rectangular hyperlinks as well. Hopefully you will see the improvements right away, and we encourage you to let us know if you encounter any other aspects to our OCR that you think could use further upgrades. That said, we’re confident that our automatic plan reader will be to your liking.
